A Field of California Dreams

Yesterday I decided to drive north up the 14 Fwy to the Antelope Valley to visit the California Poppy Reserve in Lancaster, CA.  Every Spring, between April and May, is prime wildflower season in Southern California and there is no more beautiful wildflower than our state flower the orange California Poppy.  The Interpretive Center at the California State Poppy Reserve is named in honor of self-taught artist, botanist and conservationist Jane Pinheiro.  Many of her watercolor paintings of native plants adorn the Interpretive Center's walls.  A long time member of the Lancaster community, Pinheiro was instrumental in establishing at least eight wildflower and wildlife sanctuaries in the Antelope Valley, ranging in size from 100 to 455 acres.  Because of her tiredless efforts, we Californians have these beautiful fields of flowers to visit each year.

This bug sure found a pretty place to rest
This lizard begged me to take his picture.

The long line of cars waiting to get into the California Poppy Reserve reminded me of the last scene of the movie Field of Dreams.  God made these beautiful poppies for us, and with the help of Jane Pinheiro who helped established the California Poppy Reserve, they are coming to a Field of California Dreams.

Container Garden in Bloom

One of my favorite places is my balcony, where I grow many things; roses, tomatoes, strawberries, and lots of other plants.  Here are some pictures of Spring in bloom.

Better than Animal Planet

I regularly feed the sparrows (wild bird seed) and squirrels (nuts) on my balcony. I love to sit and watch them from my couch while I drink my coffee in the morning. Today, I had a new unexpected visitor. I looked out and saw a relatively large bird land on my balcony railing, a young hawk. I guess when you feed small animals; you automatically attract larger animals, such as birds of prey. I had never seen a hawk up close before and I marveled at how beautiful it was. It had a light reddish color chest and darker grey wings and head. I grabbed my digital camera and tried to get a photo from my couch, which came out unfocused and grainy. I tried to get closer, but the hawk saw my movement and flew away. So with apologies for my poor photography, here are the photos of the hawk. I have also included a photo from the web, so you can actually distinguish what the hawk looks like.  Who says there is no wild life in Los Angeles?  My balcony is better than Animal Planet.

The Tragic Death of Monica (Burgos) Beresford-Redman

I was deeply sadden to hear about the death of Monica Beresford-Redman, owner of the Culver City-based Brazilian restaurant and bar Zabumba.  I actually met Monica through a friend once at Zabumba and remember her as being a very nice person.  Born Monica Burgos in Rio, Brazil, she was married to television producer Bruce Beresford-Redman and had two children.  Monica was well known and well liked within the Los Angeles Brazilian community.  Earlier this week, Monica and her family were on vacation at the Moon Palace Golf & Spa Resort on the beautiful Riviera Maya just south of Cancun, Mexico, when she was apparently strangled to death and her body was dumped in a sewer on the Moon Palace property.  I've actually stayed at the Moon Palace about 10 years ago and I can't imagine how anyone could be so brutally killed in such a serene, tropical setting.  The Moon Palace is a very high end resort, emaculately kept and isolated from the hustle and bustle of Cancun proper.  Allegedly Monica and her husband had been having marital difficulties and now her husband is the main suspect in her homicide.   It sickens my heart to hear about Monica's murder, knowing that her two small childern (ages 5 and 3) will now grow up without their mother.  Rest in peace Monica.
